Seeds of Kindness: A Healing Touch

Seeds of Kindness 3: Three Tons of Flax, No Wait, Seeds

Today, we have three items for your perusal:

  1. A party: Seeds of Kindness 3 has funded the second project.
  2. A question: We want to make a slight adjustment to a Seeds of Kindness 2 beneficiary—but only with your support.
  3. A forum: We want you to join Ponychan’s new /good/ board.

Two Projects Funded

If you’ve already donated to Seeds of Kindness 3, then you’ll need a lot of cocktails, coffee, and Kleenex now, because it’s party time!

Your donations will enable Another Hope to complete the orphanage building, and erect a sizable guest house right next to it. Over fifty children will be able to live in the new orphanage, and the small business next door will endow the nonprofit with a greater degree of financial security, so they can more easily pay the various running expenses for the children.

Now all donations go to the extension of the Green Village. You will remember the project from the first Seeds of Kindness fundraiser. Green Life has since built several houses on the property for living, sleeping, educational activities, and the small-scale agriculture projects they started together with the children in their care. They’ve also been accepting new children in, a gradual process as they have to first win their trust. To provide housing, food, clothing, medical care, education to even more children, they want to extend their agricultural program, and also establish their own water and electricity supply.

A little over €20,000 are still needed to reach this goal. Only a matter of days, right?

(By the way, if you missed or lost the download link and you used the “advanced donating” option, just return to the abovelinked page and enter your email address to regain the link.)

Well, Well, Well

Here’s a question for you. Toward the end of Seeds of Kindness 2, we were raising money for a project by Ingenieure Ohne Grenzen, the German version of Engineers Without Borders, that seeks to build a large number of rainwater harvesting tanks throughout Tanzania at various sites where they benefit people who would otherwise not have access to an uncontaminated water source. We already had Betterplace forward €4,271 from Seeds of Kindness 2 and €3,413 from two Kallistis to the project.

Now, however, something changed: The project is flourishing much better than we ever anticipated. Engineers Without Borders has won a long-term partner for constructing the tanks, and they’ve already built 110 tanks by now with 45 more on their way. Three teams of specialists are assisting local engineers in the construction, and the project is making great progress.

Hence, Engineers Without Borders asked us whether we could instead support a very similar project that still depends on our help. Since 2010, they’ve been supporting the establishment of a boarding school in Chonyonyo, Tanzania, that is to be completed by the end of 2014. Unfortunately, there is, as it’s so often the case, no safe water source in the region that could support the projected 1,000 students. Their conclusion from analyses and surveys of the region is that the most effective and durable solution is a well, which they want to build in cooperation with the same local partner that also realizes the rainwater tank project.

The well they’re planning to build would provide water for 3,000 people, so apart from the students, 2,000 more residents of the region would gain access to clean drinking water. At this stage, they need funds to analyze the water quality and for the drilling itself.

Of course, we raised the Seeds of Kindness 2 donations in question—€1778 and about €5 more from Kallistis—in the belief that we would assign them to the water tanks project and communicated this intention to you. Now, however, it seems greatly more effective and urgent to support the new, very similar project, so we want to let you, our donors to Seeds of Kindness 2, decide how we should proceed.

If you are one of the donors in question and you have any objections or reservations about having your donation instead support the well for the boarding school, please contact us, and we will work something out with Engineers Without Borders, so that your donation can still benefit the water tanks.

You are one of the donors in question if you donated after the given date but before August 24, 2013, to any of the following Betterplace fundraisers:

  • Kallisti III after July 1, 2013
  • Seeds of Kindness 2 after March 25, 2013
  • Kallisti II after February 24, 2013
  • Seeds of Kindness 1 after December 22, 2012
  • Kallisti I after November 19, 2012
  • Elements of Charity after June 17, 2012

We want to let Betterplace proceed with the transfers on September 9, 2013, so if you do not want to support the well for the boarding school, please contact us before that date and specify which fundraiser you donated to, when, and how much. If you have no reservations about the new project, no action is required. Thank you!

Ponychan’s Shiny New /good/

This is not directly related to Seeds of Kindness, but our friends over at Ponychan have launched /good/, a new board to facilitate, discuss, and share ideas for charity, volunteerism, altruism, and random acts of kindness. The Forum o’ Good, as it’s called, is looking to be a useful tool for those seeking inspiration for ways to make the world a better place. Opportunities are on the horizon to really bring people together in the spirit of good. So if you like that which is good… Check it out!

Welcome to Seeds of Kindness 3

We have entered into a new era, the era which—with your help—will furnish the Another Hope orphanage in Uganda with a secure budget for medicine and school fees, and allow the Green Village project for street children in Burundi to expand and endow more children in destitute with new, brighter futures.

sok.yoursiblings.org

This is the address, the portal if you will, to the new zeitgeist.

The Projects

The first of our projects has already been funded thanks to GalaCon! The second project is a guest house that will be built close to the Another Hope orphanage in Uganda so that tourists who visit the region—and they are already in contact with local tourism businesses—will pay for many of the running expenses of the orphanage such as the school fees and medical bills of the children. All the while, they will also save the costs of accommodations for their volunteers. The third and largest project is for Green Life: To extend their agricultural program, which they run for and with the street children in their care, they want to acquire another field and more animals, build a rainwater tank, and supply one of their buildings with solar energy. Another solar energy installation will benefit educational activities for the children—such as welding, music, and pottery. All these new or expanded activities are designed to meet the needs of the children and moreover yield a surplus, again, to cover such expenses as medical bills and school fees.

We still need a little under €28,000!

Seeds of Kindness 3 Album Premiere Party

The Release Party

GalaCon 2013

Post syndicated from Your Siblings.

GalaCon 2012 already went a long way in funding the Safe Project orphanage. Since then, they have further supported us with our Kallisti fundraiser cooperations, and now GalaCon 2013 has put the capstone on the orphanage: The project “Safe Project: Necessary Augmentations” is fully funded, thanks to the convention!

On top of that, another €5741 went to the closely related guest house project that will bolster the long-term financial security of the orphanage.

The cooperation was bipartite: GalaCon provided us—or me, representing Bronies for Good and Your Siblings—with a table at a central spot in the venue (and also one that was less hot), where we could receive donations from attendees and give out gifts as tokens of our appreciation; moreover, GalaCon also dedicated to our causes the full returns from their charity auction, a several-hours-long event right before the closing ceremonies.

The on-table donations amounted to €2,694.03, and the proceeds from the charity auction to an official total of €11,632. GalaCon then donated 102% of them, €11,860, to Your Siblings.

Before I gradually ran out of supplies, my charity booth was stocked with various Bronies for Good buttons, Ultra Pro playmats, Equestrian bits, and GalaCon posters and postcards. Later, artists spontaneously joined the table to draw and contribute their artwork as extra incentives. Additionally, donors had the chance to preorder the forthcoming charity album A Beautiful Heart, join a blood donation pledge drive, and write letters to our projects.

Some of the items auctioned off were plushies of Friendship is Magic characters, artwork, the GalaCon banners and flags, a “cute-off” between voice actors Andrea Libman and Anneli Heed, and a hug from voice actor Peter New (interestingly dressed for the occasion), all of which were donated by the fans, the guests of honor, and by the convention. Ponyville Live will soon upload the recording of the event, but you can already find clips from it online.

Many thanks to GalaCon, to the GalaCon crew, to the volunteers who supported me and who helped at the auction, and centrally to all our donors for this wonderful start into the Seeds of Kindness 3 season!

Seeds of Kindness 3: A Veritable Palette of Convention Charity Programming

In case you’ve found yourself lost in some delicious yet confusing muffin paradox, Seeds of Kindness 3, the third incarnation of our Seeds of Kindness project series, is on the verge of launching. As part of this final buildup, we’ve teamed up with our crabtastic friends at BronyCon and our pretzel filled comrades at GalaCon to cater you a delicious palette of charitable programming in both Europe and America! So grab your altruistic hats and call it double, folks, because we’ve got a bakers dozen worth of charitable efforts running for you to check out. Let’s dig in!

BronyCon and GalaCon

Album Preorder for Seeds of Kindness 3: A Beautiful Heart

Attendees at BronyCon and GalaCon will get the exclusive chance to donate to Seeds of Kindness 3 and leave their altruistic mark in the world, when we lift the cloth on our new fundraiser page at the conventions. This is strictly an early sneak peek, but the donations can, if desired, already be counted toward the top donor totals, and every donor qualifies for an album preorder!

As announced earlier, Seeds of Kindness 3 supports three projects for orphans and street children in Uganda and Burundi. The first of these projects will allow Another Hope to complete their own orphanage building and save the rent for their current house. The second project is closely related: Next to the orphanage, a guest house will be built that will pay for many of the running expenses of the orphanage and save them the costs of accommodations for their volunteers. The third and largest project is for Green Life in Burundi: Another field, water and solar energy supply, and other agricultural means will benefit the children’s schooling and boost their farming programs—all to not just meet the children’s most urgent needs but to yield a surplus on top of that to cover such expenditures as medical bills and school fees.

All together almost €43,000 are still needed to complete these projects.

Letter Drive for Your Siblings

Do you like to write letters? Well, then have we got the drive for you. As a BronyCon and GalaCon first, we’ll be hosting a station where you can write letters to the children of any of the Your Siblings–funded humanitarian projects that YOU helped us fund with Seeds of Kindness 1 and 2. Feel free to include a little inspiration message, pony drawing, or whatever you would like to say to the children of Burundi or Uganda and we’ll see to it that they arrive safely. (We won’t be able to convey replies back to you, so if you have questions for the projects, it may be better to send them an email.) Paper and writing supplies will be available at our table, but you are also welcome to bring your own if you’d like. The more the merrier, amirite?

Nurse Redheart’s Roundup Pledge Drive

As our longest running altruistic effort, Nurse Redheart’s Roundup serves as the biggest annual fandom-wide blood drive event. As part of preparations for the kickoff in September, we’ll be hosting a pledge drive at both BronyCon and GalaCon for donors intending to participate in the NRR proper. If you’d like to donate blood, share your story, and even get a chance at winning some awesome prizes, then please be sure to sign up a either respective BfG table and be sure to keep an eye out for updates and news on it as September approaches!

BronyCon

Charity Auction for CureSearch

As with the majority of brony conventions out there, we’ll be having a massive charity auction to benefit a wonderful cancer fighting organization by the name of CureSearch for Children’s Cancer. Full 80% of the proceeds of the auction will go directly to CureSearch, so if you’d like to donate an item to the auction, then please come by to booth 102, located near the exit of the vendor hall, to help support their crucial cancer fighting efforts!

Food Drive for Maryland Food Bank

Next on the menu is our food collection drive for the Maryland Food Bank! No family should ever have to go a night hungry (or without some delicious muffins), so help us feed the hungry folks of Maryland by donating at our table any fresh (and preferably organic!) cereals, meats, breakfast items, etc. that you can spare, so that we can help support the Maryland Food Bank’s efforts to meet the ever-growing demand for food. Fresh veggies and fruits are preferred but only on Saturday and Sunday to ensure optimal freshness when we go donate everything on Monday.

FOB 5K Casey Cares Run

As a little aside to consider, FOB Equestria has consorted with the the Baltimore Orioles to participate in a 5k charity run for the Casey Cares, a group the in Baltimore area that helps families with children struggling with cancer. FOB has created a team on Casey Cares’s website and is encouraging any nonmilitary bronies to participate as well for an entry fee of $35.00. The run begins on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. and they could really use some bronies out there to cheer them on, so be sure to grab an early breakfast and show some brony charity solidarity! Additional contact and event information can be found here.

Seeds of Kindness 3 Charity Lineup

This year’s BronyCon and GalaCon are only weeks away, and so is this year’s Seeds of Kindness fundraiser and the release of the associated charity album! Today we are announcing the final charity lineup for the launch of Seeds of Kindness 3.

The Three Humanitarian Projects

Your SiblingsOver the past five months, Your Siblings has collaborated with the local organizations Another Hope and Green Life in Uganda and Burundi, respectively, to finalize precisely what needs to be bought and built to expand their individual projects. Both of these organizations have been founded to look after children who have lost home and family to war, poverty, or disease. The goal of our fundraiser is to allow them to accept more children into their care, provide them with a greater gamut of educational activities to endow them with a self-determined future, and further secure the viability of the projects in the long term.

The first of these projects will cover the costs for a number of outstanding items, such as fixtures and a solar installation, that will allow Another Hope to complete their own orphanage building and save the rent for their current house. The second project is closely related: A guest house will be built close to the orphanage so that tourists who visit the region—and they are already in contact with local tourism businesses—will pay for many of the running expenses of the orphanage. All these new or expanded activities are designed to meet the needs of the children and moreover yield a surplus that will be sold to cover medical bills and school fees.

All together around €43,000 are still needed to complete these projects. Do you think our community can do it?

US 501(c)(3) Charity Partners

Room to ReadWe are now also supporting select US charities with specific Seeds of Kindness 3 campaigns at conventions as well as planned online auctions. Room to Read, for example, specializes in literacy and gender equality: In currently ten developing countries, they fund and drive the building of schools and libraries, supply them with quality educational literature, and give scholarships to girls whose families could not otherwise afford it. A donation of just $250 buys one year of holistic education for one girl.

Finally, we also want to make Seeds of Kindness 3 about your initiatives, your ideas, and your charitable efforts. But more about that in a separate announcement.
Don’t miss next week’s announcement of our Seeds of Kindness 3 launch event!

Kallisti III – Flame-Roasted Taco Art Gallery

What a lovely and beautiful, campfire-laden Kallisti that was.

And like all great online campfire parties, we have the presence of wonderful folks like you to thank for the success of latest 24-hour round of funtastic shenanigans, sleep deprivation, show staff interviews, and callous art production for Kallisti III. Overall, we managed to raise a toasty $2,452 in donations for GalaCon and the German Branch of Engineers Without Borders! Although we did not beat out the total of the second Kallisti livestream telethon (still standing at $7,017), we did end up beating out the $2000 total from the original Kallisti.

As always, a massive thanks to our guests, contributing artists, moderators, hosts, and dedicated livestream crew for operating the stream and keeping us all warm! We also owe very special thanks to every last donor and participant who helped make Kallisti III a success! Regardless of whether you gave $1 or $1000, you gave us the privilege and honor of making Kallisti the event we’ve all come to cherish.

And be sure to keep an eye out for Kallisti IV as we all take advantage of the sweltering, relaxation-filled summertime!

Side Notes

If you missed any of the interviews that took place during Kallisti III, fear not! Celestia Radio has you covered with high-quality recordings of the interviews on their YouTube channel.

And lastly, our fundraising page is still open for the Kallisti III event if you’d like to support the efforts of everyone involved.

Kallisti III Interviews with Amy Keating Rogers, Andrea Libman, Anneli Heed, M.A. Larson, and Julie Basecqz

kallisti-iii-banner-url-500

Together with GalaCon, we held our 24-hour charity livestream this past weekend. We raised €1880—the fundraiser, however, is still open—which have been divided between GalaCon and the German Engineers Without Borders and almost sufficed to fund another rainwater harvesting tank in Tanzania, where many people lack access to clean, uncontaminated water, leading to many illnesses and deaths especially of children.

Several prominent guests helped boost the event. In order of appearance: Amy Keating Rogers, Andrea Libman, Anneli Heed, M.A. Larson, and Julie Basecqz.

Our partner Celestia Radio recorded the interviews and uploaded them to YouTube for your enjoyment.

After the break.

Final Announcement: 24-Hour Charity Livestream Kallisti III

Dear offseasoners,

You are the ones who are dedicated enough to stick around even when the next season is still months off. That is why we trust that during the 24 hours of the Kallisti III charity livestream, you will have the dedication and also creativity to make your mark with fresh, interesting questions and art requests for our interview guests and artists, respectively.

The 24-hour Kallisti III charity livestream will launch
June 22 at noon EDT on events.yoursiblings.org!

Bronies for Good and GalaCon have collaborated with BronyState, Ponyville Live, and Celestia Radio to bring you some of the crème de la crème of pony, who will take your questions from the chat.

  • Amy Keating Rogers (Saturday between noon and 1:30 p.m. EDT), the writer of such episodes as The Best Night Ever or A Friend in Deed
  • Andrea Libman (to be announced), the voice of Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy
  • Anneli Heed (probably Saturday, around 6 p.m. EDT), the Swedish Spitfire, Photo Finish, Spike, Cheerilee, and more
  • Dave Polsky (when we hit a big milestone), the writer of Too Many Pinkie Pies, Keep Calm and Flutter On, and more :’-(
  • Julie Basecqz (June 22, after 2 p.m. EDT), the French voice of Rarity
  • M.A. Larson (June 23, 2 a.m. EDT), the writer who we thank for Magical Mystery Cure, It’s About Time, and more

All the while, the video stream will show the genesis of artworks that you can request in the chat. The generous artists who have agreed to draw live on air are given below.

Please note that for practical reasons, OC requests are limited to the OCs of interview guests, that all art has to be SFW and spoiler-free, and that you need to furnish a comprehensive, albeit one-line, description of your idea.

Kallisti III being a charity event, 50% of the donations will again support GalaCon, who are planning their own charity events at their August 2013 convention, while the other 50% will benefit Seeds of Kindness 2 and thereby the plans of the German Engineers Without Borders to build 200 direly needed rainwater harvesting tanks in Tanzania.

If you wish to get an idea of the interviews we will be conducting, check out Celestia Radio’s playlist of Kallisti II interviews. Similarly, here is the Bronies for Good gallery of Kallisti II artworks.

We are looking forward to welcoming you on events.yoursiblings.org—meanwhile, please spread the word!
